Thank you to everyone who has told us about their experiences of Long Covid so far.
We have already heard from more than 500 Kent and Medway residents about what it is like to live with Long Covid and which services and support matter most to you.
Your views, summarised in the Patient experiences of Long Covid report were used to help shape the Post Covid Assessment Service, which was launched in May 2021.
Long Covid Patient Reference Group established
We have established a Long Covid Patient Reference Group made up of patients across Kent and Medway.
The group has been involved in designing services for people with Long Covid. For instance, the group told us there needs to be more ongoing contact for patients as well as an assessment process.
As a result, we are putting in place ‘case managers’ to support patients in the longer term. To find out more about the Long Covid Patient Reference Group, please email kmicb.engage@nhs.net
The evidence regarding post-covid syndrome in children and young people is rapidly emerging and specialised diagnostic and assessment clinics have been set up to support children and young people.
Presently the demand for this service for children and young people is smaller than that of the adult population, however children and young people in Kent and Medway can be referred by their GP to local paediatrics clinic who will onward refer (where necessary) to the Children and young people Long Covid London Hub
Kent and Medway Post Covid Assessment Service - sometimes referred to as PCAS - opened on 14 May 2021.
More than 2,000 people have been referred, assessed, and then referred on for treatment.
On average patients are waiting between six to eight weeks for their initial assessment and we work with West Kent Primary Care, who provide the service, to monitor demand and make sure it runs smoothly.
Any patient who is experiencing continuing symptoms after 12 weeks of a Covid infection should contact their GP practice.
Before referring to the Post Covid Assessment Service, a patient’s GP may carry out further tests - depending on symptoms - so any alternative diagnosis can be ruled out and also to decide if referral to the Post Covid Assessment Service would be suitable.
Once referred, the Post Covid Assessment Service will get in touch and an expert team of professionals will assess a person’s condition and provide support in accessing services to help recovery.
Patients are usually assessed within six weeks, unless they chose to delay assessment for personal reasons.
In response to patient feedback, we are now expanding this assessment process and to develop local support and rehabilitation services for people with Long Covid.
